Course Delivery

This course is delivered in partnership with Cardiff Metropolitan University online and in person sessions, workshops and independent guided study. This course will consist of 36 hours of face-to-face learning and 140 hours of Independent study across 12 weeks. Courses will be delivered once a week 6pm-9pm.

Learners will have the opportunity to choose between the Data & Knowledge Management or Blockchain Fundamentals module.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

Explore essential concepts of blockchain and related distributed ledger technologies.
Articulate how blockchain can ensure trust, and the difference between centralised and decentralised trust.
Apply and create crypto currencies, mining, digital assets and value preservation without the middleman.
Blockchain graph analysis and embedded learning with data visualisation and prediction.
Explore different types of blockchains, cryptographic algorithms, Distributed Applications (DApp) and decentralised peer-to-peer networks.
Apply programming techniques to create smart contracts.
Critically evaluate and identify emerging technologies and research areas relevant to blockchain.

Indicative content

The following list is indicative content, and the final delivery will depend on emerging technologies and literatures:

Introduction to blockchain and related distributed ledger technologies (e.g.. Ethereum, Bitcoin, Corda, Hyperledger etc).
Concept of hashing and associated algorithm (e.g. SHA 256) to establish integrity and privacy.
Establishing public and private blockchain.
Rise of distributed Applications (DApp)
Writing Smart Contracts and DApps.
