ALS hosted its first ever CIPD HR Learner Networking Session, a key event for both our learners and our Professional Services team.
With 170 HR apprenticeship learners currently completing their Level 3 or Level 5 CIPD qualifications, HR is one of the largest and fastest-growing apprenticeship routes at ALS. Recognising the importance of connection in the people profession, the team set out to create an event that would bring learners together to share experiences and insights.
The session was hosted in partnership with The CIPD in Wales, reinforcing our shared commitment to supporting the next generation of HR professionals.
Nicky Hope from The CIPD in Wales opened the event with an engaging presentation on the HR landscape in Wales and the value of CIPD membership. All ALS CIPD learners receive two years of membership fully funded at the start of their course, something Nicky encouraged everyone to take full advantage of.
“Use the resources, attend networking events and expand your network,” she advised, highlighting the wealth of career tools and professional connections available through the CIPD website.
Next, Nick Carter from Carter People Development took to the floor to speak about the importance of continuous professional development (CPD). Drawing on his diverse career, which includes the Royal Air Force, Cwm Taf Morgannwg, and experience as a programme lead and assessor for both CIPD and CAVC, Nick shared how ongoing learning has shaped his professional journey.
“Do a formal long course every three years,” he encouraged. “And do something every year”.
Whether it’s resilience training, communication skills or something completely new. It all adds value and perspective to your career.
The morning concluded with an appearance from Lesley Richards from CIPD Wales, whose discussion on HR burnout and professional balance served as an important reminder for those working in people-focused roles. Her message about setting boundaries and maintaining well-being strongly resonated with the attendees.
This first networking event marks the start of what we hope will become a regular opportunity for learners to connect with one another and with professionals across the industry.
