Aviation maintenance mechanics work across the aviation sector in both military and civilian organisations. They inspect and support the maintenance of a wide range of fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft, from small aeroplanes and airliners to jet fighters and helicopters. Employers range from small specialist organisations to large aviation and engineering companies.
What does an aviation maintenance mechanic do?
The main purpose of the role is to support the safe and efficient maintenance of aeroplanes and helicopters. Aviation maintenance mechanics carry out flight maintenance inspections, prepare and safety-check work areas, and plan maintenance activities.
Their responsibilities can include:
- Carrying out airworthiness inspections and maintenance activities.
- Supporting aircraft ground handling activities.
- Completing accurate maintenance records and documentation.
- Checking that work has been completed safely and in accordance with approved procedures.
- Restoring and securing the work area when maintenance activities are complete.
Where do they work?
Aviation maintenance mechanics work in a highly regulated engineering environment. Depending on the organisation and type of maintenance activity, they may work indoors or outdoors in locations such as hangars, dispersals, gates, aprons and workshops. They may also work on ships or at locations away from airfields and airports.
The role can involve working on different types of aircraft and aircraft components. Aviation maintenance mechanics may work shifts and in potentially hazardous environments, including at height, in noisy conditions or within confined spaces.

Delivery method
This course is delivered in blocks of 10 weeks or an agreed delivery pattern with the employer. Followed by 8 months in the workplace and an End-Point Assessment.
